Ayurvedic Treatment Types
Kerala is strongly associated with Ayurvedic treatment, with many hospitals, colleges and Ayurvedic resorts established there.
The word Ayurveda derives from a Sanskrit word meaning “knowledge for prolonging life” . Ayurveda is a five thousand year old holistic medical system widely practiced in India. Great importance is placed on the harmony of mind ,body and spirit, with emphasis on refreshing oneself ,eliminating all toxic imbalances in the body, boosting immunity , providing protection from stress and fighting fatigue. Ayurvedic theory believes that the body is controlled by three doshas(forces) that are made up by the basic elements of space, fire and water.
Ayurvedic treatment is carried out following a detailed consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor, herbal oils are used to massage the body, a popular treatment for fatigue and back ache is Ahhyamgam,, a full body massage is given ,
including the head, using specific medicated oils, this is followed by a steam bath, Sirodhara is used for treating anxiety and insomnia, this involves pouring a gentle stream of warm medicated oil continuously onto the forehead from an earthenware pot above. Many hotels offer Ayurvedic treatment, but i recommend staying at a specific resort such as Kalari Kovalam or Somatheeram for a proper course of treatment.
